Introduction

Cat Ba National Park (Vườn Quα»‘c gia CΓ‘t BΓ ) is a nationally significant protected area that forms the core of the Cat Ba Archipelago UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Located on Cat Ba Island, the park protects a diverse range of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, from limestone karst rainforests to coastal mangroves. Its primary global significance is as the last remaining habitat for the critically endangered Cat Ba langur, one of the rarest primates on Earth.

‍

Ngu Lam Peak

The most popular activity in the park is the hike to this summit. The trail is steep and involves climbing hundreds of uneven stone steps and some rocky scrambles, but the effort is rewarded with a panoramic view from the observation tower over the surrounding jungle-clad karst landscape.

‍

Trung Trang Cave

Stretching for about 300 meters through a mountain, this cave system showcases impressive, naturally formed stalactites and stalagmites. The cave was also used as a field hospital during the American War. The entrance ticket to the park includes admission to this cave.

‍

Kim Giao Forest

This unique section of the park's ecosystem is located near the base of Ngu Lam Peak. It is characterized by the presence of the rare Nageia fleuryi tree, a species with straight trunks that were historically prized for making chopsticks for royalty. The trail to the peak leads directly through this distinct forest.

Tips from locals

Local tips

‍

πŸ‘Ÿ The trails are rugged, steep, and often slippery, even in dry weather. Do not attempt the hikes in sandals or casual shoes. Proper hiking shoes or sturdy trainers with good grip are essential for safety and comfort.

‍

πŸ’§ Carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person for the Ngu Lam Peak hike. The humidity makes dehydration a real risk, and there are no shops or vendors once you are on the trail.

‍

πŸ’ It is extremely unlikely you will see the Cat Ba langur on the main tourist trails. These primates are critically endangered, shy, and inhabit remote, inaccessible parts of the park. Visit to appreciate the forest and views, not with the expectation of a rare primate sighting.

‍

πŸ’‘ For the best experience, start your hike either right when the park opens at 8 AM to enjoy cooler temperatures and quiet trails, or around 2 PM when the midday crowds have thinned out. This timing also provides better light for photography from the peak.

‍

Be aware

‍

πŸ§—β€β™€οΈ The final section of the Ngu Lam Peak trail is a very steep scramble up sharp rocks and a metal ladder to reach the small observation tower. This can be challenging for visitors with a fear of heights, limited mobility, or those who are not confident on uneven terrain.

‍

🦟 Insect repellent is highly recommended, especially from May to September. Mosquitoes are common in the dense jungle, and leeches can sometimes be found on the trails after heavy rain.
