Introduction

Dark Cave (Hang Tối) is an adventure-focused cave experience located within Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Unlike its neighbors, this cave system is kept in its natural, unlit state, requiring visitors to explore with headlamps. The experience is defined by a combination of adrenaline activities, including a 400-meter zipline to the entrance, swimming in the cool Chay River, and navigating the cave to reach a therapeutic natural mud bath deep inside.

Zipline Across the Chay River

The tour begins with a thrilling 400-meter zipline from a stilted tower directly to the cave's entrance. This provides a superb aerial view of the river's distinct emerald-green water and the surrounding limestone karst landscape. It is one of the longest ziplines in Vietnam.

The Natural Mud Bath

The ultimate destination inside the cave is a large chamber filled with dense, buoyant mud. With no artificial lights, you navigate through narrow passages with only a headlamp before floating effortlessly in the mineral-rich mud pool.

Kayaking and River Activities

After exploring the cave and washing off the mud in the Chay River, the experience continues with kayaking. Visitors paddle back to the main station, with opportunities to stop at various water-based obstacle courses, smaller ziplines, and water swings.

Exploring the Unlit Cave

Equipped with a helmet and headlamp, you'll wade and climb through the dark passageways of the cave. The darkness preserves the raw feel of the cave, and your headlamp will illuminate ancient fossils visible on the stone walls.

Getting there

From Phong Nha Town to Dark Cave (approx. 20 km):

Tips from locals

Local tips

👗 Wear your swimsuit under your clothes. This will save you time and hassle, as the changing rooms can get busy. You will get completely wet and muddy, so choose swimwear and clothes you don't mind getting dirty.

🔐 Use the provided lockers for all your valuables, including phones, wallets, and non-waterproof cameras. You cannot take these items into the cave, and it's better to secure them before you start the zipline.

⚖️ Be aware of the zipline's weight restrictions. There is a minimum weight of 40kg (88 lbs) and a maximum of 90kg (200 lbs). Staff will check before allowing you on the zipline.

💡 The natural mud in the cave is extremely buoyant, much more so than water. Don't panic or try to "swim". Just lean back, relax, and you will float effortlessly on the surface. It's a unique sensation.

Be aware

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 During peak season (June-August) and on weekends, this attraction becomes extremely popular. Expect significant queues for the main zipline and a very crowded experience inside the mud bath chamber.

🥶 The water in the Chay River is sourced from underground springs and can be surprisingly cold, even on hot days. Be prepared for a chilly shock when you swim to the cave entrance and wash off the mud afterward.
