Introduction

Hang En Cave (Hang Γ‰n), located within the core zone of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, is the world's third-largest cave. Reached via a multi-day trek, its defining feature is a massive chamber containing its own sandy beach, turquoise river, and unique jungle ecosystem. Access is restricted and exclusively managed through guided expeditions, making a visit a planned adventure rather than a casual stop.

‍

The Trek to Hang En

The journey is a major part of the experience. The route covers approximately 11 kilometers each way, involving multiple river crossings of the Rao Thuong River, steep uphill and downhill sections through dense jungle, and varied terrain that requires a good level of physical fitness.

‍

Ban Doong Village

En route to the cave, the trek passes through this remote village inhabited by the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic minority group. It offers a brief and respectful glimpse into a way of life that exists in relative isolation within the national park, with only around 40 residents.

‍

The Main Cavern & Campsite

The primary destination is the cave's enormous main chamber. A vast sandy beach here serves as the overnight campsite, set beside a calm, blue river. The scale is immense, with the cave entrance soaring over 120 meters high, allowing daylight to illuminate the unique interior landscape.

‍

The "Exit" Mouth

Beyond the main campsite lies another massive entrance. This viewpoint, often seen in photographs, looks out from the darkness of the cave onto the lush, sunlit jungle outside. It requires a scramble up some rocks to reach but provides one of the most memorable perspectives of the cave's scale.

Getting there

All expeditions start from the Oxalis Adventure headquarters in Phong Nha town. You must arrange your travel to Phong Nha town first.

‍

From Dong Hoi (closest city with airport/train station) to Phong Nha (approx. 45 km):

‍

πŸš— Taxi: 45-60 mins | 450,000 - 600,000 VND ~ $18 - $24 USD

Note: This is the most common and direct option.

‍

🚘 Private Car/Shuttle: 45-60 mins | Often pre-booked through tour operators or local hotels.

Note: Oxalis and many hotels in Phong Nha offer shuttle services.

‍

πŸ›΅ Motorbike: 60-75 mins

Note: A scenic ride, but only recommended for experienced riders comfortable with Vietnamese traffic.

‍

⚠️ The tour operator, Oxalis Adventure, provides detailed instructions on reaching their office in Phong Nha upon booking. It is best to arrive in Phong Nha the day before your trek begins.

Hours & Admission

πŸ•— Opening hours:

  • Access to Hang En Cave is only possible via a pre-booked, 2-day, 1-night guided tour with Oxalis Adventure. Tours depart on a fixed schedule. The trekking season typically runs from late December to mid-September and is closed during the rainy season for safety.

‍

🎫 Ticket prices:

There is no "ticket" for entry. Visitors must book an all-inclusive expedition package.

  • Tour Price: Approximately 7,600,000 VND ~ $315 USD per person. Prices are subject to change and should be confirmed with the operator.
  • Notes: The tour price is comprehensive, including the park entrance fee, environment fee, guide services, safety assistants, porters, all meals, camping equipment, and safety gear. Booking months in advance is essential as spots are limited.

‍

🚢 Best time to visit:

Tips from locals

Local tips

‍

πŸ₯Ύ This is a serious trek, not a walk. The official difficulty level is "Moderate", but it includes steep inclines, descents, and over 30 river crossings. Ensure your fitness level is adequate. You will be tired, wet, and muddy, which is all part of the adventure.

‍

🦟 Leeches are a certainty on the trail, especially after rain. The tour operator provides leech socks which are very effective. Don't panic if you see one; your guide will show you how to remove them properly. Wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers is also recommended.

‍

πŸ“Έ The best light for photographing the main cave entrance with its beach is typically in the early afternoon as the sun shines directly into the cavern. For the classic "looking out" shot from the far entrance, morning light is often better. A tripod is highly recommended for capturing the low-light interior.

‍

πŸ’‘ This is a true off-grid experience. There is no electricity, Wi-Fi, or cell phone signal after the first few kilometers of the trek. Inform your family of your itinerary beforehand, and embrace the opportunity to disconnect completely.

‍

Be aware

‍

⚠️ The tour has a strict cancellation policy due to its logistical complexity and limited spots. Ensure you read the terms and conditions carefully before booking, and consider travel insurance that covers cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances.

‍

πŸ‘Ÿ Your footwear can make or break the trip. While specialized trekking sandals are provided, you will be walking in wet, muddy, and uneven conditions for hours. Do not attempt this trek in new, untested shoes. Well-worn hiking shoes with excellent grip are essential.
