Introduction

Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám) is a historic complex of buildings and courtyards located in central Hanoi. Originally founded in 1070 as a temple dedicated to Confucius, it became the site of Vietnam's first national university, the Imperial Academy, in 1076. The site is a preserved example of traditional Vietnamese architecture and a monument to the country's scholarly history, honoring Vietnam's most accomplished academics for nearly 700 years.

The Five Courtyards

The complex is methodically laid out into five distinct walled courtyards. The first two offer a peaceful entry with ancient trees and manicured lawns, while the latter three contain the most significant architectural and historical features of the site. Progressing through each courtyard gate feels like stepping further back in time.

Khue Van Cac Pavilion

This elegant structure, built in 1805, serves as the main entrance to the third courtyard and has become an official symbol of Hanoi. The pavilion's design, with its ornate roof and circular window, represents the constellation of literature and the harmony of heaven and earth. It is one of the most photographed structures within the temple grounds.

The Well of Heavenly Clarity

Located in the third courtyard, this large, square pond was designed to reflect the sky. It served as a place for scholars to gather their thoughts and find clarity before entering the halls of learning. The pond is surrounded by the halls housing the famous turtle steles.

Doctors' Stelae Garden

This area is the Temple's greatest treasure, featuring 82 stone steles mounted on the backs of stone turtles. Each stele records the names and achievements of scholars who passed the royal examinations between 1442 and 1779. These artifacts are a UNESCO Memory of the World inscription and represent the nation's reverence for education.

The Ceremonial Hall and Sanctuary

In the fourth courtyard, the Ceremonial Hall is where ceremonies were once conducted. Directly behind it, the Sanctuary houses an altar to Confucius and his four most brilliant disciples. This is an active place of worship where visitors can observe locals paying their respects.

Tips from locals

Local tips

👗This is a place of reverence, not just a tourist site. A strict dress code is enforced; ensure your shoulders and knees are covered to gain entry. Staff at the gate will turn away visitors who are not dressed appropriately.

🎧For a deeper understanding of the site's rich history, rent an audio guide at the entrance. It provides detailed explanations for each courtyard and highlight, transforming the visit from a simple walk-through into a meaningful historical lesson.

🐢It is now strictly forbidden to touch the heads of the stone turtles in the stelae garden. This long-standing tradition caused significant wear on the artifacts. You will see signs and security enforcing this rule to preserve this UNESCO-recognized treasure.

💡Visit during the graduation season around May and June to see scores of local students in traditional áo dài and formal wear taking commemorative photos. It adds a wonderful, living dimension to the site’s scholarly history.

Be aware

⚠️ The site can become very busy, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Be prepared for crowds, which can make it challenging to take photos or enjoy a quiet moment. Arriving right at opening time is the best way to mitigate this.

👟 The grounds are large, and you'll be doing a lot of walking on stone paths that can be uneven. Wear comfortable shoes. The layout also includes several high thresholds and steps, making it difficult for visitors with mobility issues.
